Shaheen on House Passage of Russia Sanctions Legislation: This bipartisan legislation is the response that the Kremlin deserves

**In May, Shaheen played an instrumental role in urging Senate leadership to act on Russia sanctions and was a key negotiator on this legislation**

(Washington, DC)—U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) released the following statement after the House of Representatives approved legislation to sanction Russia. Shaheen was instrumental in urging Senate leadership to act on Russian sanctions legislation and was a key negotiator on the legislation that passed the Senate in an overwhelming bipartisan vote. She has been an outspoken critic of President Putin’s authoritarian regime and was the first in Congress to call for hearings on Russian interference in the 2016 elections.

“I’m relieved this legislation is one step closer to reaching the President’s desk,” said Shaheen. “The Russian government has, so far, experienced no significant repercussions for interfering in our elections – a process of intrusion that began more than a year ago. President Putin is looking for every opportunity to portray our democracy and values as weak in order to legitimize his own authoritarian regime. We must make it abundantly clear that there will be consequences for their actions. This bipartisan legislation is the response that the Kremlin deserves.”
