ICYMI: New Gallup Poll Shows ACA Tax Credits Hit All-Time High Popularity, Growing Support Among Independents
(Washington, DC) – In case you missed it: A new survey shows that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enhanced premium tax credits (EPTCs) have reached an all-time high of 57% popularity among Americans. The polling also shows that support for the tax credits has continued to grow among independents, jumping 10 points to a high of 63% approval compared to last year. The Gallup poll comes as the Senate is set to vote on a Democratic proposal to extend the soon-expiring tax credits later this week.
Key Findings:
- “Gallup has tracked Americans’ approval of the ACA since November 2012, and the latest rating is up three percentage points from last year’s, which was similar to the previous 55% high recorded in April 2017 and in November 2020.”
- “While Democrats’ and Republicans’ current ratings are roughly in line with last year’s figures, independents’ rating has jumped 10 points to a record high.”
“The polling is clear: More and more Americans, including more independents than ever before, support the vital ACA tax credits that are set to expire at the end of this year,” said Senator Shaheen. “There’s still time to come together to find a solution that will prevent premiums from skyrocketing for millions of families, but my Republican colleagues need to join with us — it’s in their political interest to get this done.”
Shaheen is leading efforts in Congress to make health care more affordable through the preservation and extension of the enhanced premium tax credits. Through negotiations to reopen the government, Shaheen secured a guaranteed vote by mid-December on legislation to address skyrocketing health care costs. Shaheen’s first bill introduction this Congress was her landmark Health Care Affordability Act—bicameral legislation to permanently extend the tax credits for Marketplace coverage that lower health care costs for millions of Americans.
