PRESS RELEASE: SHAHEEN: DUNFORD AN EXCELLENT CHOICE FOR CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT CHIEFS

(Washington, DC) – After the President announced his nomination of General Joseph Dunford and General Paul Selva to serve as Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) made the following statement:

“Marine General Joseph Dunford, a native New Englander, has earned broad respect throughout the armed forces, Congress and the administration for his exemplary service at all levels of the military and his leadership in Iraq and Afghanistan,” said Shaheen. “’Fighting Joe’ earned his nickname by being an unflappable commander with an uncanny grasp of the battlefield. As our nation fights an extremely complex and evolving threat from ISIS and other sophisticated terror groups, I believe General Dunford would be an excellent choice for the job of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. I also applaud the President’s decision to nominate General Paul Selva for the position of Vice Chairman. General Selva’s leadership has earned him high esteem from all branches of the military and he would be an outstanding addition to the Joint Chiefs of Staff.”

Senator Shaheen is a Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and the Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee.
