Shaheen Applauds Strong Bipartisan Vote to Block President's "Emergency" Declaration

(Washington, DC)—U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) issued the following statement after the Senate passed a resolution that blocks the President’s “emergency” declaration in a bipartisan vote:

“I’m very pleased that the Senate was able to act in a bipartisan way to defend the Constitution and protect resources that have been allocated by Congress to support our armed forces,” said Shaheen. “Candidate Trump promised that Mexico would pay for the wall – he never mentioned raiding taxpayer funds dedicated to the military. I will not stand idly by while funding is threatened for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the New Hampshire National Guard, and will continue do everything in my power to protect New Hampshire’s role in our national security.”

Senator Shaheen spoke in favor of the resolution on the Senate floor prior to the vote.

Senator Shaheen recently led a New Hampshire Congressional Delegation letter to the President, urging him to reconsider this plan which could have an adverse impact on the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) and the New Hampshire National Guard (NHNG). Shaheen also introduced a bipartisan joint resolution  with Senators Tom Udall (D-NM), Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) to terminate the President’s national emergency declaration and uphold the separation of powers outlined in the Constitution, similar to the resolution voted on today.
