Shaheen Statement on Nomination of William Barr to Serve as U.S. Attorney General

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), the lead Democrat of the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee, issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s nomination of William Barr to serve as the next U.S. Attorney General:

“The position of Attorney General is critical in any administration, but that role carries significant and heightened responsibilities today,” said Shaheen. “From ensuring the Special Counsel’s investigation can move forward without interference, to combating voter suppression and protecting fundamental human rights for our immigrant and minority communities – the role of our nation’s ‘top cop’ has never been more important. I will pay careful attention to these issues as I review William Barr’s record. I look forward to meeting with him to discuss a number of other key concerns, specifically continued efforts to combat the opioid and substance misuse epidemic and his commitment to maintain an independent Department of Justice.”
