Sen. Shaheen pushes for Harriet Tubman to replace Andrew Jackson on $20 bill
During Women's History Month, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-New Hampshire, is renewing her nearly-decade-long push to get Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill.
The legislation, first introduced in 2015, has now been through three different congresses and three presidential administrations, and still, it may be until 2030 before it actually happens.
Shaheen told News 9 that currency is a reflection of what's important to a society.
“It seems to me if we can put a man on the moon in a decade, we ought to be able to put a woman on our currency in a decade,” Shaheen said.
Part of the delays stems from the fact that the treasury has a schedule for re-designing denominations and that it can take years to counterfeit-proof paper bills.
