Shaheen: US should share border expertise with Europe

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen is urging the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to help European nations struggling with a surge of Syrian refugees by sharing what has worked well along the U.S. border with Mexico.

Earlier this month, Shaheen led a trip to Greece and Germany to learn about reception centers where arriving refugees are processed and provided basic services. She also visited Texas earlier this year to observe border security and immigration enforcement there. On Friday, she wrote to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, asking him to help his counterparts in Europe and to share best practices for receiving and processing large numbers of individuals.

In particular, she says the agency has tremendous expertise in verifying identities, registering families as a unit and providing health screenings.
