Shaheen, local paving company head urge passage of federal transportation bill
by John DiSatso
MANCHESTER - Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and the president of one of the state's largest paving companies on Tuesday urged the U.S. House to act quickly on a long-term extension of the federal transportation authorization bill, warning that continued gridlock will cost New Hampshire jobs and stall the Interstate 93 widening project. Shaheen, D-N.H., said a Senate-passed bill contains $170 million a year for New Hampshire as well as a provision allowing the state to borrow $115 million, based on anticip… Continue Reading

Contraception debate should be about people, not politics
by Senator Jeanne Shaheen
WOMEN'S health care is under attack. Already this year we have seen assaults on Planned Parenthood, on federal funding for women's health and now on access to contraception. Now the forces behind these attacks have a dangerous new proposal that would affect health care for all Americans. The proposal offered by Senate Republicans in Congress would empower corporations or any other employer to deny virtually any preventive or essential health service to any American based on any religious or mo… Continue Reading

Energy efficiency is good policy, good for economy
by Senator Jeanne Shaheen
Democrats and Republicans agree we need action on our economy, and we need action on our energy policy. We must overcome the political gridlock that has kept solutions to both problems out of reach. The need for jobs is obvious - too many Americans remain out of work and too many businesses are still struggling. And the need for action on our energy policy is also dire. Our dependence on foreign oil remains a grave security risk, and our outdated energy infrastructure has left American business… Continue Reading

Why the Birth-Control Mandate Makes Sense
by Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Barbara Boxer and Patty Murray
It was a historic victory for women's health when the Obama administration changed the law to require private health plans to provide preventive services including breast exams, HIV screening and contraception for free. This new policy will help millions of women get the affordable care they need. Now, sadly, there is an aggressive and misleading campaign to deny this benefit to women. It is being waged in the name of religious liberty. But the real forces behind it are the same ones that sough… Continue Reading

Shaheen teaches Alvirne High School students a lesson on gender equality
by Patrick Meighan
HUDSON - Jeanne Shaheen fielded students' questions about jobs, health-care, party politics and life as a U.S. senator. But more than her answers, perhaps the biggest impact Shaheen made during her visit Thursday morning to Alvirne High School was that she stood before 300 or so seniors and ROTC students as a woman who has held a unique position in U.S. history. Shaheen, a Democrat, is the only woman ever to have served both as a state governor and U.S. senator. Shaheen served as New Hampshire… Continue Reading

The People of Berlin Never Gave Up
by Senator Jeanne Shaheen
After months of unnecessary delays and uncertainty, Berlin Prison will finally open. And that's good news for jobs in the North Country. Berlin Prison itself will add more than 300 jobs and provide a $40 million annual economic boost to the region. Berlin began its campaign for the prison in 2001. By 2007 construction had begun and in 2010 the prison was completed. However, for more than a year, a protracted budget fight in Congress left the prison fully complete but lacking the funds to open.… Continue Reading

Senate must send signal to Russia
by Senator Jeanne Shaheen
It's time for the Senate to send Russia a strong signal in support of human rights, transparency and the rule of law. In the aftermath of last week's election - marred by fraud, followed by unjust arrests of hundreds of peaceful protestors, opposition leaders and human rights activists - it's crucial to stand with courageous Russian citizens. who are asking only that their basic and universal rights are protected. The Senate has two options - one for immediate action, and one to consider … Continue Reading

A More Perfect European Union
by Senator Jeanne Shaheen
European leaders are gathering in Brussels on Dec. 8 to organize a collective response to the growing debt crisis -- but it's not only the euro that endangers European unity. Lost in the headlines is the possibility of renewed violence in the western Balkans, which threatens to roll back the significant progress we have made in the region over the past 15 years. The deteriorating security situation in northern Kosovo requires an urgent, united, and focused transatlantic response that re-commits … Continue Reading

Ayotte, Shaheen praise passage of defense spending bill they helped craft
by Ted Siefer
New Hampshire's U.S. senators are praising the passage of a $662 billion defense spending bill, which includes a controversial provision that would mandate the military detention of suspected terrorists captured abroad and on U.S. soil. Both Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte and Democrat Sen. Jeanne Shaheen are members of the Armed Services Committee, and they played important roles in drafting the National Defense Authorization Act, which was passed by the Senate on Thursday by a vote of … Continue Reading

About our veterans and jobs
by Senator Jeanne Shaheen
Commemorating Veterans Day is a humbling experience. As we take the day to thank those who have served, it is often difficult to comprehend the struggles many of our veterans have endured. I have met so many of our veterans, and each one of their stories is unique. Many are harrowing, others heart-rending. The truth is, we may never fully understand the sacrifices they've made-we can only thank them and their families from the bottom of our hearts. I'm proud that our country comes together to… Continue Reading

by Abby Spegman

Talking to a group of students, staff and parents, Shaheen discussed legislation she is co-sponsoring that would fund STEM - science, technology, engineering and mathematics - programs in high schools. Schools would compete for grants for such programs. She hopes the legislation… Continue Reading

An army of robots descends on Capitol Hill (well, kinda)
by Shawna Thomas and Carrie Dann
A policy goal of one member of the United States Senate got a boost this afternoon from one nearly-universal fact about modern American culture: Almost everyone thinks robots are way cool. Sen. Jean Shaheen (D-N.H.) was aided by a small army of robots (and by the teams of students who built them) on Monday in unveiling legislation to help high schoolers gain more access to programs furthering science, technology, engineering and math education. In a presentation tied to the legislation's intr… Continue Reading

U.S. DOT delivers $20m for Memorial Bridge project
by Scott E. Kinney
PORTSMOUTH - The U. S. Department of Transportation has obligated $20 million in funding for the replacement of the Memorial Bridge between Portsmouth and Kittery, Maine. Sens. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, and Susan Collins, R-Maine, joined together last Congress to fight for the bridge funding and were successful in helping secure a Tiger II grant in October 2010. That funding was called into question in February as Congress began budget discussions. Since the news came ou… Continue Reading

Shaheen listens to local concerns
by Katherine Burt
LITTLETON- U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen has spent the last few months trying to answer the question of how to get the economy working again, and last Friday's North Country tour was an opportunity to focus on the needs of small businesses - to determine where the federal government can help, and where it needs to step back and give the private sector room to grow, Shaheen said. A stop in Littleton to hear concerns and answer questions from local business and political leaders was part of that mis… Continue Reading
