Shaheen Questions Assistant Secretary of State on Chinese Efforts to Stem Flow of Fentanyl

U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), the only woman on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, today questioned Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs David Stilwell on efforts by the Chinese government to enforce its commitments to rein in fentanyl trafficking to the United States. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), China is the source of the vast majority of fentanyl that enters the U.S. Despite reaching an agreement with the Trump administration in December 2018 to classify fentanyl as a controlled substance, earlier this month the Chinese government stated that there had only been "limited" cooperation with the U.S. towards reducing the illegal export of fentanyl. During her questioning, Shaheen underscored the devastating impact fentanyl has had on Granite State communities and stressed the importance of ensuring that China meets its obligation to crack down on fentanyl trafficking.
