Shaheen Statement on Internet Sales Tax Legislation

(Washington, DC) U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) made the following statement after reports that Senate Republican leadership has agreed to advance the so-called Marketplace Fairness Act:

“Internet sales tax legislation would be bad for New Hampshire’s economy and our small businesses. I will continue to do everything in my power as U.S. Senator to prevent this legislation from advancing in Congress. The last thing our small businesses need is this unnecessary red tape.”

Senator Shaheen has been a vocal critic of attempts to pass bill that would impose Internet sales tax collection requirements on New Hampshire businesses. Although New Hampshire does not have a sales tax, proposed internet sales tax legislation, known as the Marketplace Fairness Act, would force New Hampshire businesses to collect sales taxes for 46 states and 9,600 taxing jurisdictions across the country.

Shaheen is the lead Democrat on the U.S. Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee.
