(Nashua, NH) – Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) held a press conference at the Nashua Police Department in recognition of National Community Policing Week. Community policing promotes the establishment of ties between law enforcement agencies and the public they serve to resolve issues within the community. During the event, the Senators emphasized the importance of maintaining these strong relationships between police officers and communities and recognized law enforcement for the vital work they perform each day on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. They also heard more about the Nashua Police Department’s innovative efforts to promote community policing in the city. In addition, Shaheen and Hassan announced the introduction of their bipartisan resolution with Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), marking October 4 – October 10 as National Community Policing Week.

The Senators were joined by members of the Nashua Police Department as well as representatives of the New Hampshire Association of Chiefs of Police, the New Hampshire Police Association and area police departments.

“I’m glad to have visited the Nashua Police Department this morning in recognition of National Community Policing Week and the tremendous work our law enforcement officers perform each day to protect their communities,” said Senator Shaheen. “The tragic events over the last several months have reminded us of the importance of building strong relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve. My bipartisan community policing resolution with Senators Hassan and Cornyn supports these efforts while also recognizing the challenges law enforcement face. In the Senate, I’ll continue to fight for funding for programs that advance the principles of community policing and support our law enforcement officers.”

“The events of the past few months have underscored just how important it is that law enforcement officers build trust with the individuals that they are sworn to protect,” Senator Hassan said. “Community policing is an important tool to improve the relationship between law enforcement and the communities that they serve. I am incredibly grateful to our officers who put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities, and I will keep working with Senator Shaheen to ensure that they have the support that they need.”
