SHAHEEN: BIOMASS A BOON FOR NEW HAMPSHIRE ECONOMY, ENERGY INDEPENDENCE

(Goffstown, N.H.) – Biomass heating can help create jobs in New Hampshire and transition our country to a clean energy economy, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) said today during a visit to online wood pellet retailer WoodPellets.com in Goffstown.

“Biomass presents an excellent opportunity to keep our energy dollars at home, instead of shipping them overseas to foreign oil-producing nations like Saudi Arabia and Venezuela,” Shaheen said.  “At the same time, it allows businesses and consumers to switch to an energy source that is cost-effective, clean, and renewable.”

“I’m very proud to have Senator Shaheen visit us,” said WoodPellets.com President and CEO Jon Strimling.  “Her leadership in renewable energy initiatives is inspiring to companies like ours, as we work to create jobs in New Hampshire and provide consumers with affordable, renewable heating solutions.”

Shaheen, a member of the Senate Energy and Small Business Committees, has long supported efforts to incentivize the use of biomass energy.  Last Congress, she introduced bipartisan legislation with U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) that would give a 30 percent tax incentive for the installation of high efficiency biomass systems in commercial buildings.  In May, Shaheen also introduced a national energy efficiency strategy with U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) that would create jobs and save businesses and consumers money.
