Shaheen Statement on Appropriations Vote
(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a senior member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, released the following statement:
“Over the past weeks, I, like millions of Americans have been horrified by the deaths of two Americans and images of ICE and CBP officers conducting chaotic and lawless enforcement operations in communities across the country.
“Like the overwhelming majority of Americans, I believe in a strong and secure border. And I believe that people who commit violent crimes or pose a threat to public safety should be held accountable. But that is not what we have seen from this Administration, which has engaged in sweeping and untargeted operations. That is why reform at DHS is so desperately needed and why Secretary Noem needs to go.
“Tonight I voted to advance five bipartisan bills that will allow us to fund 96% of our government. These bills will help keep rural hospitals open, support families battling addiction, ensure our service members and civil servants get paid and much more.
“This vote also begins a two-week clock on urgent, bipartisan talks, to ensure accountability for what happened in Minnesota and to put in place concrete reforms to prevent incidents like this from happening again. The American people have made it resoundingly clear they want Congress to get this done.”
