(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) released the following statement after President Obama announced that 8,400 U.S. troops will remain in Afghanistan through the end of his term:
"Following the recommendations of our senior military leaders and their assessment of the conditions on the ground, I support President Obama's decision to keep 8,400 troops in Afghanistan. While we have made progress in Afghanistan, the security situation remains tenuous and we must continue to train and support the Afghanistan National Security Forces that are leading the fight to deny the Taliban, ISIS and other terrorists a safe haven. The President’s announcement also comes ahead of this week’s NATO Summit in Warsaw and will help reinforce our shared commitment to the people of Afghanistan."
