Shaheen Statement on Senate Blocking Approval of Montenegro's Accession to NATO

**Shaheen: "Senate approval of Montenegro’s accession is essential to sending a clear message that Congress stands firmly with Montenegro and on the side of freedom, security and democracy in Europe"**

(Manchester, NH) — U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Subcommittee on European Affairs, released the following statement after several Republican senators blocked approval of Montenegro's accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

“I am deeply disappointed that a few Senators blocked Senate approval of Montenegro’s NATO accession last night,” said Senator Shaheen. “When the new Congress convenes in January, I will urge Senate leadership to make immediate reconsideration of this issue a priority.”

“NATO remains indispensable to global security, and the United States must continue to build and strengthen the successful Alliance. Senate approval of Montenegro’s accession is essential to sending a clear message that Congress stands firmly with Montenegro and on the side of freedom, security and democracy in Europe.”

Shaheen delivered remarks on the Senate floor this week applauding a vote in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to advance consideration of Montenegro’s accession to NATO.
