(Washington, DC) - U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen today issued the following statement on the passing of Senator Edward M. Kennedy:

"Today we lost perhaps the greatest public servant of our time.  Senator Kennedy's distinguished career centered on helping people.  He led the fight on issues of equality - fighting for fair wages for our workers, and for a better education for our students.  And Senator Kennedy was the leading voice in the fight to make health care a right, not a privilege, in America.

"Because of his dedication to and passion for service, literally tens of millions of Americans lead better lives and dream bigger dreams.  It's very difficult to imagine life without Senator Kennedy, but I know his legacy of compassion and generosity will live on forever.

"It was a privilege to know Senator Kennedy and to call him a friend.  My thoughts and prayers are with the Kennedy family."
