Shaheen, Tillis Send Letter to President Biden with U.S. Priorities for NATO Summit

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Thom Tillis (R-NC), co-chairs of the U.S. Senate NATO Observer Group, are sending a bipartisan letter to President Biden that outlines key objectives and priorities for the upcoming NATO Summit, which will take place in July in Washington, DC.

In part, the Senators wrote: “Hosting the NATO Summit as we celebrate 75 years of the most successful Alliance in history sends a strong message to our allies and adversaries alike that the United States remains committed to the principles and values which underpin our collective security.”

Included in the proposed Summit outcomes are NATO’s continued support for Ukraine, recognition of a stronger NATO partnership with partners and allies in the Indo Pacific, robust defense spending commitments from all NATO allies and additional leadership to promote a Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda within NATO.

Full text of the letter can be found here.

As co-chairs of the U.S. Senate NATO Observer Group, which they re-started together in 2018, Shaheen and Tillis led bipartisan efforts in the Senate in support of the transatlantic Alliance. The Senators have been outspoken in their support to grow the Alliance, recently applauding ratification by Türkiye’s Parliament of Sweden’s NATO accession protocols and leading a resolution criticizing Hungary’s delay in ratifying Sweden’s accession.
