Shaheen Statement on Trump Administration’s Latest Effort to Sabotage the Affordable Care Act

Administration Intensifies Efforts to Erode Protections and Coverage for Americans Secured through the Affordable Care Act

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) issued the following statement in response to the Trump administration’s newly released guidance regarding 1332 waivers. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the U.S. Department of Treasury announced that the administration has vastly weakened safeguards for the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) 1332 state waiver process, which will allow states to individually waive many important coverage requirements established by the ACA.

“The Trump administration’s repeated efforts to unravel the Affordable Care Act and weaken key protections secured by the ACA are dangerous and put the health and well-being of millions of Americans at risk,” said Shaheen. “This latest attack will erode safeguards that help provide Granite Staters with comprehensive, affordable and reliable health care coverage. The President’s actions will exacerbate instability in health insurance markets, increase premiums and put life-saving protections for Americans on the chopping block. The Trump administration’s cynical effort to undermine health care needs to stop. The administration and Congressional Republican leadership must work across the aisle to improve the ACA and help make health care more affordable and accessible for every American.”
