ICYMI: On Fox & Friends and CNN News Central This Morning, Shaheen Presses President Trump and Congressional Republicans to Address Looming Premium Hike, Extend ACA Tax Credits
(Washington, DC) – In case you missed it: On Fox News’ Fox & Friends and CNN News Central this morning, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), author of bicameral legislation that would permanently extend Affordable Care Act (ACA) enhanced premium tax credits, pressed Congressional Republicans and President Trump to work with Democrats to prevent health care costs from skyrocketing imminently by extending the ACA credits that have helped millions of Americans afford health care. Yesterday, Shaheen released a statement on reports that the White House was preparing to unveil a health care framework that included a temporary extension of the enhanced premium tax credits.
On Fox & Friends, Shaheen said: “I appreciate the fact that the President said he’s willing to come to the table, I think Democrats are ready to join in any negotiations and our Republican colleagues have indicated that they think we can come up with a compromise. But it’s in everyone’s interest to get this done because we know that 76% of people who receive those premium tax credits are in states that Donald Trump won when he won the election last year, 57% of them are in Republican Congressional districts – so there’s a real incentive to get this done. And if Republicans don’t come to the table, the American people are gonna make them pay at the polls next year.”
On CNN News Central, Shaheen said: “I think Democrats are willing to come to the table. I understood that a number of our Republican colleagues also wanted to get this done. It’s in their interest – they understand that this is an issue not just for blue but for red, and that people don’t care what party you’re in. If they can’t afford their health insurance, that means they can’t get the health care they need.”

Shaheen is leading efforts in Congress to make health care more affordable through the preservation and extension of the enhanced premium tax credits. Through negotiations to reopen the government, Shaheen secured a guaranteed vote by mid-December on legislation to address skyrocketing health care costs. Shaheen’s first bill introduction this Congress was her landmark Health Care Affordability Act—bicameral legislation to permanently extend the tax credits for Marketplace coverage that lower health care costs for millions of Americans.
