Shaheen Continues “Affordability Action Tour”: Highlights Cost of President Trump’s Inflationary Tariffs at Woodstock Soapstone Company
(West Lebanon, NH) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) continued her “Affordability Action Tour” with a visit to Woodstock Soapstone Company, New Hampshire’s only factory-direct wood and gas stove manufacturer, to discuss the ongoing effects of President Trump’s costly tariffs on the Granite State’s businesses. The company, which designs, builds and sells stoves in house, has been facing 10-20% higher production costs due to tariffs on raw materials like cast iron and steel. “President Trump's tariffs are doing real damage to our economy, and no one knows that better than America's small businesses,” said Senator Shaheen. “At a time when costs are already too high, businesses like Woodstock Soapstone Company are facing additional pressure thanks to higher production costs caused by the administration’s trade war. That raises families’ energy costs and endangers sales, good-paying jobs and the region’s economy. I’m going to keep working to highlight how this administration’s reckless tariffs are making the affordability crisis worse.”
Woodstock Soapstone Company also faces challenges from the Trump administration’s early termination of the energy efficiency home improvement tax credit that homeowners can use to offset up to 30% of the cost a highly efficient wood stove. Shaheen offered an amendment to restore the credit during consideration in the Senate, but the Republican Big Beautiful Betrayal ends the credit on December 31, 2025.
Senator Shaheen is helping lead efforts in Congress to mitigate the harmful impacts of President Trump's tariffs. In recent months, Shaheen has traveled across the Granite State to discuss the impact of tariffs on New Hampshire’s tourism industry and to visit businesses impacted by President Trump’s trade war including Brothers’ Cortado, Brueckner Group USA, Colby Footwear, Chatila’s Bakery, C&J, DCI Furniture, Mount Cabot Maple, American Calan Inc. and NH Ball Bearings.
Earlier in the year, Shaheen took to the Senate floor to call for unanimous consent to pass her Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes on Imported Goods Act and highlight the devastating impacts the trade war has on families, small businesses, American manufacturing and key trade partnerships across the world, but Senate Republicans blocked the move. Shaheen has also helped introduce bipartisan legislation, Creating Access to Necessary American-Canadian Duty Adjustments (CANADA) Act, that would exempt United States-owned small businesses from the sweeping tariffs imposed on Canadian products.
